Troubleshoot Your Alternator Before Going to the Workshop<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

If the alternator isn\u2019t charging at all, there\u2019s a simple test you can perform.<\/b><\/b><\/p>

At startup, the alternator requires an excitation current<\/b><\/span> from the ignition switch via the D+ terminal<\/b><\/span>. This initial current magnetizes the rotor, allowing the alternator to start generating power and maintain its own magnetization.<\/p>

However, this excitation current isn\u2019t always present<\/b><\/span>, and that can prevent the alternator from starting to charge.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

Take a cable from the positive terminal of one of your batteries and briefly touch it to the D+ terminal on the alternator.<\/b><\/b><\/p>

If the alternator starts charging, you\u2019ll usually hear a noticeable change in sound as it activates.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

If the alternator starts charging when you touch the D+ terminal, the issue is likely in the charge indicator lamp or the wiring in the circuit<\/b><\/b><\/p>

battery \u2192 ignition switch \u2192 charge lamp \u2192 D+.<\/b><\/b><\/p>

In that case, either the lamp itself or faulty cables and connections between the ignition switch and the D+ terminal need to be replaced.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t
