Switch or fuse?
A small fuse can save the entire boat
Om du har en laddad väldimensionerad batteribank och får kortslutning frigörs det lika mycket energi som om du tänder eld på en liter bensin. Varje sekund.
Risk with electrical systems
Modern electrical systems can deliver large amounts of energy. A healthy, properly dimensioned battery bank can, in case of a short circuit, release as much energy as if you set fire to a full liter of gasoline, every second. Then it’s not the time to look for switches.
Fuses solve the problem
If the cables are properly fused, it’s the fuse that burns out and breaks the circuit before anything else in the boat does. It may sound inconvenient, it may feel expensive, but compared to almost everything else on the boat, it’s such a small cost that it’s penny-wise and pound-foolish not to do it.
Using a main switch instead of a fuse is not recommended.
If one chooses to have a main switch, it is important to choose one of good quality and maintain it properly.
It is important to check that the connections on the main switch do not corrode, as that causes voltage drop. So make a habit of checking and, if necessary, sanding away any corrosion every season.
