Where should I plug in my main switch?
Location of main switches for safe and efficient electricity on board
The main switch should be connected directly after the main fuse as seen from the battery.
In most cases, a main switch is not needed in the charging circuit, but only for the consumers. A main switch in the charging circuit risks introducing voltage drops and can damage the generator if it is switched off when the engine is running.
We therefore recommend that any main switches are placed between the positive of the consumer bank and the distribution board/electricity centre.
Keep in mind that some appliances on board should not be connected via a main switch. For example, the heater as it has its own shutdown procedure that must not be abruptly cancelled.
Then you may not want to have the fridge over the big main switch if you are only going to leave the boat for a short period and want to keep food in the fridge. So on that cable you can advantageously mount your own fuse and switch.
