Troubleshoot Your Alternator Before Going to the Workshop

If the alternator isn’t charging at all, there’s a simple test you can perform.

At startup, the alternator requires an excitation current from the ignition switch via the D+ terminal. This initial current magnetizes the rotor, allowing the alternator to start generating power and maintain its own magnetization.

However, this excitation current isn’t always present, and that can prevent the alternator from starting to charge.

Take a cable from the positive terminal of one of your batteries and briefly touch it to the D+ terminal on the alternator.

If the alternator starts charging, you’ll usually hear a noticeable change in sound as it activates.

If the alternator starts charging when you touch the D+ terminal, the issue is likely in the charge indicator lamp or the wiring in the circuit

battery → ignition switch → charge lamp → D+.

In that case, either the lamp itself or faulty cables and connections between the ignition switch and the D+ terminal need to be replaced.

If nothing happens even after applying voltage to the D+ terminal, the alternator likely needs to be repaired or replaced.
